As a passionate globe-trotter and diary-keeper, I’ve got a stack of off-the-beaten-path travel stories. I found myself in China during the four-month build up to Tiananmen Square in 1989, witnessed the Velvet Divorce between the Czech Republic and Slovakia on New Year’s Eve 1993 and spent time in Libya and Syria a couple of years before the recent political troubles.
More recently, I’ve succeeded in getting my young son hooked on independent travel. We set off on our first backpacking trip together when he was eight and since then we’ve had adventures in Tibet, Cambodia, Vietnam and China … with more planned.
Other regions I’ve explored include Easter Island, Chile, Ecuador, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, Egypt, Cuba, Indonesia, the USA and huge tracts of Europe.
